Can I Whiten My Smile at Home?
A smile is the best presentation card anyone can have. A beautiful and healthy smile shows self-discipline and responsibility, and proof of it is how people showing one have better odds of getting a job that requires public interaction.
Besides having a better chance of finding this kind of job, a bright smile increases your self-esteem. It also improves your social interactions (since people with yellow or crooked teeth sometimes find themselves ashamed of talking or smiling at others) and motivates you to keep better oral care.
In this blog, our cosmetic dentist in NE Calgary will offer a solution to whiten your teeth – Our famous teeth whitening in NE Calgary!
What is Teeth Whitening?
Teeth whitening is, as the name suggests, a cosmetic dental procedure that consists of applying a bleaching agent over the surface of your teeth. The agent is either hydrogen or carbamide peroxide.
Depending on your preferences, you may look for teeth whitening near you at a dental office or undergo the treatment at home (with a previous appointment with a dental professional). We will explain both below.
Types of Teeth Whitening
As we mentioned above, you can whiten your teeth with the following systems:
1. In-Office Whitening
It is professional teeth whitening since a dental professional supervises it in the dental chair. Your doctor will monitor your teeth and gums for any periodontal issues or cavities. If you do, they will address these first.
As a rule, cosmetic dental procedures must wait until your oral health is optimal.
To start, they will place a mouth retractor and a resin over your gums. It will protect these from the peroxide (it burns the gums) during treatment.
Then, they will apply the peroxide to the front surface of your teeth with a pen or a brush. The teeth are usually the front ones, canines, and both premolars. The molars are in the back, so doctors do not apply the agent to these.
The product will act for 20-30 minutes; then, your doctor will remove it, wash the dentition, and add another application for better results. Some doctors like a blue light to speed the process, but no scientific studies confirm this acceleration. We suggest opting for the traditional way because the light factor increases the price and does not show better results (they are the same).
Finally, your dentist will place a desensitizing agent to address tooth sensitivity. Not all patients suffer from it, but it is a common side effect.
2. At-Home Whitening
If you want to do the procedure in the comfort of your house, you can visit a dentist near you for whitening trays and product advice. There are many types, and only a dental professional will recommend the best one for you and the correct frequency.
They will take molds of your teeth for the whitening trays and give them to you once they are ready (along with the gel). You will use them every day or every other day, depending on your needs.
The process is quite simple. Apply the gel inside the trays and fit the tray inside your mouth for the time your doctor suggested. In a couple of weeks, you will start seeing results.
How Long Does Teeth Whitening Last?
Results depend on the lifestyle of the patient. It can last as little as three months or up to two years. Follow your doctor's instructions for the best results.
