Some Facts of Dental Implants
Research shows that missing one or many teeth impacts your self-esteem. People may feel uncomfortable interacting with others and feel self-conscious about their smiles. Besides aesthetics, it also leads to abnormalities when eating and speaking that, it is safe to say, no one likes.
Luckily, thanks to modern dentistry, losing a dental piece does not have to be the end of the world. There are many options to replace a missing tooth. We offer dental implants in NE Calgary that may last for a lifetime.
What is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant is a small device that looks like a screw and replaces the root of a missing dental piece. You may look for dental implants near you if you are looking for a permanent option to replace one or many teeth.
Our dentist in NE Calgary recommends choosing dental implants if you want something that lasts many decades and requires little maintenance. However, keep in mind that these are more expensive than dentures or dental bridges. It is a long-term investment.
What to Expect from the Procedure?
After choosing the right dentist near you for your dental implant surgery, they will evaluate you, take a set of photographs, x-rays and CT, and molds of your mouth. They will design the case and determine the exact position to place the implant.
If you lack sufficient bone to support the device, they may suggest bone grafting. Your doctor will take bone from a donor site and place it in the recipient site (in this case, the jawbone). After this procedure, your doctor will advise when you should undergo dental implant surgery.
Once you are ready, your doctor will administer a local anesthetic to numb the area. They will drill the dental implant inside the jawbone and place an abutment on top. You will wait from three to six months for osseointegration (the union of the bone and implant), and afterward, get a permanent dental crown that will rest on top of the abutment.
What to Expect After the Procedure?
After dental implant surgery, you may experience minor bleeding and swelling for a few days.
For the bleeding – To control it, bite down gauze in the surgical area for thirty minutes. You may change it as many times as you want until the bleeding ceases.
For the swelling – Place an ice pack for ten minutes on/off, three times a day, for the first two days.
For the pain – Your doctor may recommend taking antibiotics and pain medication. Take them as prescribed.
To avoid the first 24 hours – You must not drink using a straw, smoke, spit, and rinse. After 24 hours, you may rinse with warm salt water (1 teaspoon salt in a cup of water) several times a day.
Take it easy – You may rest during the first day and go back to your daily activities if the pain eases. We recommend waiting at least 72 hours for strenuous exercise not to dislodge the blood clot.
The Benefits of Dental Implants
Dental implants are expensive; however, they offer more benefits than any other device that replaces teeth. They may last for a lifetime; you can brush your teeth like always, you will feel and look natural, and the bone loss stops.
When you lose a tooth, the bone resorbs due to lack of stimulation. Dental implants fuse with your bone and become a part of your anatomy. They prevent bone loss and make you feel younger because your face stops shrinking.
